Petroleum engineering students at the University of Aberdeen are set to benefit from the donation of new modelling and analysis software worth over £3.4m.
The package comes courtesy of Edinburgh-based software engineering company Petroleum Experts (PETEX), which develops and commercialises software applications for the petroleum industry.
It will be used to support academic research and teaching on the School of Engineering’s Petroleum Engineering degree programmes.
The package, worth £3,446,617.90 in total, will see students gain experience in using software that is widely used by the petroleum and energy industry. This includes the IPM suite for modelling the complete petroleum production system including reservoir, wells and the surface network; and the MOVE suite, a structural modelling and analysis toolkit that provides a full digital environment for structural modelling to reduce risk and uncertainty in geological models.
Professor Ekaterina Pavlovskaia, the Head of School of Engineering, said the donation would provide students with valuable experience that will enhance their career prospects upon graduation, as well as supporting research within the School.
She added: “This generous donation underlines the strong links between the School and its industrial partners, which is helping to support our education and research.
“We are grateful to PETEX for their ongoing support in providing industry-standard software that is allowing our students to gain valuable experience enhancing their employment prospects, while also strengthening our research capabilities within the School.”
