Instabilities are ubiquitous in various fields of engineering and science

They give rise to interesting phenomenon and patterns. In this talk, I will focus on the instabilities occurring in hydrodynamical, magnetohydrodynamical and thermoacoustic systems. I will demonstrate the utility of tools from Dynamical Systems theory in understanding the various patterns observed in theseĀ  systems.

In particular I will discuss the various states, patterns and their associated dynamics close to the onset of instability through several bifurcations. The onset of fluid convection will be unravelled in detail using a low-dimensional model. Preliminary results from numerical simulations and/or experiments on the generation of a magnetic field (the dynamo effect) and noise in a combustion chamber would also be presented.
