Non-feedback and feedback methods of control of chaos in nonlinear systems will be reviewed
The classical OGY method of stabilizing unstable periodic orbits embedded in a chaotic attractor, its variations and the Pyragas method of time delayed feedback will be discussed with application to nonlinear mechanical systems. The robustness of control in the presence of noise is investigated with examples of the harmonically excited Duffing-Ueda oscillator and the Murali-Lakshmanan-Chua circuit. The sliding mode control of chaos will be discussed. The robustness of sliding mode control with respect to parameter variations and external noise will also be presented with examples of two dimensional airfoil with nonlinear pitching stiffness and a composite plate with geometric nonlinearities. The use of neural network for chaos control in continous time nonlinear dynamical systems in conjunction with the OGY and Pyragas methods will be applied to the chaos control of a Bonhoeffer- Van-der Pol oscillator.
