Dr Luke Bisby is a Reader and Senior Research Fellow in Structures in Fire working within the BRE Centre for Fire Safety Engineering at the University of Edinburgh. The BRE Centre is a world-leading teaching and research centre which combines interdisciplinary intellectual resources, specialized laboratory facilities, and administrative and technical support required to perform advanced research in virtually all areas relevant to fire safety in the built and natural environments. This includes 9 full-time academic staff, more than 40 PhD students and 6 post-doctoral researchers, and laboratory space for performing both fire safety and structural fire engineering research. The research team within the BRE Centre brings together transdisciplinary skills and technical knowledge that encompass advanced structural engineering and infrastructure rehabilitation; large-scale and field-scale structural fire testing; materials characterization; computational modelling of structures in fire; fire safety science; combustion and fire dynamics.
This talk will provide an introduction to the BRE Centre at Edinburgh, its courses, past, current, and future research areas, expertise, laboratory facilities, and so on. It is hoped that opportunities for collaborative teaching and/or research between Edinburgh and Aberdeen might be identified and discussed. Dr Bisby will give a 30 minute talk that can be followed by lengthy discussions.
