Abstract: The presentation will focus mainly on the problem of vortex-induced vibration experienced by risers used by the oil & gas companies in their off-shore installations.

Abstract: The presentation will focus mainly on the problem of vortex-induced vibration experienced by risers used by the oil & gas companies in their off-shore installations. The problem of geometrical nonlinearity in the dynamical response will be discussed and some theoretical results of a mathematical model representing a vertical slender riser will be shown. These will be followed by a preliminary analysis of experimental data obtained in a flow tank into which a flexible circular cylinder was placed. In this, the emphasis will be put on showing the importance of considering the nonlinear characteristics of riser dynamics for adequate prediction of their responses.

In the end a very different application - but one which also requires a nonlinear approach in the study of dynamics - will be presented.
