Description
Rectangular-plan, 320,000 gallon, open air heated seawater swimming pool (55 yards x 20 yards) with long, single storey, pantiled, Art Deco, entrance range comprising turnstiles, café and flanking changing rooms; stepped buttressed enclosure walls. Painted poured concrete.

It was designed by R.R. Gall of Gregory & Gall Architects main contractor William Tawse Ltd, Aberdeen. It was opened on the 2nd of June 1934. Water heating, circulation, filtering and disinfecting systems installed 1935; gents changing room extended 1936.
A classic piece of 1930's period pool design.
Stonehaven Open Air Swimming Pool's survival is 'unique as the sole Art Déco 50 metre salt-water open air pool anywhere in the UK' (Mitchell and MacDonald). Furthermore, together with Gourock, it is one of only two open air pools left in Scotland. Built at a time when recreational swimming was becoming increasingly popular and more readily available to the public through improved public transport and increased leisure time. LBR
