Scotland at the Smithsonian

The Institute's Role

The Elphinstone Institute is working as consultant to the Smithsonian Institution in programming the festival. Representing the Institute will be Dr Ian Russell, Stanley Robertson, and Sheena Blackhall.

'The Smithsonian is delighted to be working with the Elphinstone Institute on what promises to be the largest and most prominent exhibition of Scottish culture ever held in the United States. Most Americans know little about North-East Scotland or Doric culture. The 2003 Festival offers an opportunity to introduce the culture of Aberdeenshire to more than a million visitors who annually attend the two-week event.' - Dr Nancy Groce, Festival Organizer and Curator at the Smithsonian's Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage

About the Festival

Through dynamic performances, demonstrations, and educational programs, more than one hundred of Scotland's finest musicians, storytellers, cooks, craftspeple, and scholars will demonstrate and celebrate the living traditions that make and sustain Scotland's distinctive culture. From the Highlands and Islands to the Borders, inner-city Glasgow to Edinburgh's Royal Mile, the shop floors and mills of Dundee to the oil fields of the North Sea, Scotland's heritage, regional cultures, and occupations will be highlighted and honoured.
