Elphinstone Institute Public Lecture Series

The LGBT+ community has left its mark on Aberdeen and its culture, yet its own history tends to be invisible to the public eye. Jakub Ivanecky and Deejay Bullock from Four Pillars will discuss Queer people of the past and also how LGBT+ Pride made its way to the Granite City.

Jakub Ivanecky is a postgraduate student of Medieval and Early Modern Studies here at the University of Aberdeen, interested in researching cultural and socio-economic histories of Europe as well as minority histories more generally. He has been working for Four Pillars for over two years now, firstly as a member of the PATH Project, now as LGBT+ Inclusion Advocate.

Deejay Bullock became interested in community support and sexual health after he was diagnosed with HIV in 2009. After several years of battling depression, he wanted to give back and prevent others from experiencing similar situations. Following four years in sexual health services, Deejay expanded his knowledge and remit and founded Four Pillars to support the LGBT+ community more holistically. Now he tries to ensure everything runs smoothly and people are getting the right support. Outside of the organisation, as if Four Pillars wasn’t his home, he enjoys going for long walks, socialising, dancing, and meeting new people.
