Scottish Dance Beyond 1805: Reaction and Regulation presents a history of Scottish music and dance over the last 200 years and focuses on sources originating in Aberdeenshire. The book tells the story of what changed and why. It unfolds through a series of colourful characters, through the dances they taught and the music they danced to, and through the story of one dance in particular: the Highland Fling. It considers how changes in Scottish dance reflected changes in Scottish society and culture.

In this online launch event, Dr Ballantyne will introduce the book and demonstrate some of the dance steps that are discussed in it. She also hopes to persuade some fine musicians to drop in and play some tunes - with some more dancing - at the end.

There will be plenty of time for questions. The event will take place on Microsoft Teams. Ticket holders will receive a link to a Teams session nearer to the time of the event.

Patricia H. Ballantyne is an Honorary Research Fellow with the University of Aberdeen's Elphinstone Institute. She gained a PhD in Ethnology in 2016, on which the book is based. She has taught Scottish step dance and lectured on Scottish dance for many years at home and abroad. She also plays piano and calls dances in a ceilidh dance band. For more information, please see www.patballantyne.com
