Part of the Glasgow Centre for International Development Lecture Series 2012/13

The lecture will discuss the evolution of the concept of Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) and the rationale for prioritising these diseases in the landscape of Global Health.

The talk will emphasise the achievements to date in controlling or eliminating NTDs, the cost effectiveness of the interventions as well as the challenges to match the expanded commitments of a wide range of partners made at a meeting in London in January 2012.  The role of the pharmaceutical industry donations, that of Non Governmental Organisations in supporting implementation and the importance of the commitment of the endemic countries themselves from national level to communities will be emphasised as will the importance of robust monitoring and evaluation of interventions.

The needs for focussed research over the next decade to improve the tools available will be discussed in the context of the time frame of the WHO Roadmap which defines the targets to be met in the context of World Health Assembly Resolutions.
