Congratulations to Art History PhD student Freya Juul Jensen, who has been awarded a Foundation Grant from Funds for Women Graduates. FfWG provides grants, bursaries and fellowships to women graduates to help with living expenses.
In recognition of her status as an outstanding applicant, Freya has also received the Lady Joan Reid Award. Lady Joan Reid (1932-2017) was a distinguished member and former Chair of the FfWG Board, whose dedication to literacy and historical awareness continues to inspire, leaving a lasting impact on those she touched.
Freya’s PhD project, 'Queer Time and Visualising a Sapphic Genealogy: Depictions of Female-Female Love and Desire in Nineteenth- and Twentieth-Century Britain and France', outlines the development of a visual language for queer women that is still used today. This includes the use of figures as Sappho, portrayals of sexual differences without men through physical attributes, and the usage of temporal drag and queer nonlinear time.
