September 2024: Setting up From the Floe Edge
As we prepare for our second project visit to Kinngait next month, we wanted to look back to our initial consultation visit in September 2024!
Last September, project lead Isabelle Gapp travelled to Kinngait with Co-PI Sarah Cooley. We were fortunate to spend 10 days in the community. Most days were spent up in the print studios – our thanks to everyone for putting up with our daily presence! We were able to formally present the project goals for From the Floe Edge to the West Baffin Co-operative’s (WBEC) executive board, thanks to William Huffman (Executive Manager) for facilitating this, and to WBEC president Pauloosie Kowmageak for his time and attention.
New friends were made in Claire Hornby and Bryanna Sherbo who were both in Kinngait to monitor walrus populations for the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada. Their janky pick-up truck allowed us to explore the community to get a better sense of the local environment. Our time in Kinngait also saw us cross paths with Myrah Graham, Northern Liaison for the Amundsen Science research vessel. After a bit of conspiring, we hope to be able to do more work with the Amundsen over coming years.
With the support of Audrey Hurd (Studio Manager) and Juumi Takpaungai (Asst. Studio Manager) we also co-developed plans for where the project should go next. While Juumi is photographing the sea ice surrounding Kinngait as part of the project, Audrey is working with the WBEC office staff to organise trips onto the sea ice this Spring. Sarah and Isabelle also developed a firm plan for 2025, including project interviews, visits to archives, and analysis of satellite data.
We were able to enjoy the autumn equinox and watch the fog drift in and out across the inlet. And now we’re counting down the days towards colder, icier conditions!
