Congratulations to Dr Karolin Hijazi and Dr Rosa Moreno Lopez for their recent publication in collaboration with Professor Neil Gow, one of the world's foremost microbiologists. The paper entitled Clonal evolution of Candida albicans, Candida glabrata and Candida dubliniensis at oral niche level in health and disease, and published in the Journal of Oral Microbiology, reports the work started as a collaboration between the Institute of Dentistry and Dr Alex Moorhouse at the time of his PhD supervised by Professor Gow.
The study was conducted on a cohort of dental patients sampled longitudinally over a period of 22 months. For the first time, this work sheds light on the genetic stability over time of three key Candida species retrieved from a whole range of oral niches. This data will be crucial to future studies establishing links between genetic traits of Candida and oral health profiles.
