We are delighted to announce that a collaborate paper "The Oral Health Status of Patients with Peripheral Vascular Disorders: A Systematic Review" has been accepted for publication in the journal Vascular. Vascular provides readers with new and unusual up-to-date articles and case reports focusing on vascular and endovascular topics. It is a highly international forum for the discussion and debate of all aspects of this distinct surgical specialty. It also features opinion pieces, literature reviews and controversial issues presented from various points of view.
Writing about the paper, co-author Sayed Almoosawy explained “Dental health has been associated with various health conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, arthritis and peripheral vascular disease. A team comprised of medical and dental health professionals in the University of Aberdeen decided to undertake a collaborative study. The aim was to build a picture of the dental health in patients with various peripheral vascular diseases. The study showed poor dental health amongst these patients in many aspects. It serves as a reminder to both medical and dental health professionals that a holistic approach is essential in optimising patient care.”
This interdisciplinary project saw collaboration between the Institute of Dentistry (IoD) and the Institute for Education in Medical and Dental Sciences (IEMDS). The project was undertaken by undergraduate students Sayed Abdulmotaleb Almoosawy (IEMDS), and Mhairi McGowan (IoD), with Dr Karolin Hijazi, Mr Paul Bachoo, Professor Rona Patey, and Dr George Cherukara as supervisors.
The Institute of Dentistry actively encourages all students to get involved in a summer research project during their time in Aberdeen. Visit our research pages to find out more about our research activities: https://www.abdn.ac.uk/dental/research/index.php.
