It was a blustery autumnal day last year when staff and students were given the opportunity to attend a moving talk by BDS4 student Rachel Jackson on the empowering role art has played in her studies in dentistry at Aberdeen; suddenly if felt like the sun was shining as we were all warmed by Rachel’s striking honesty and eloquence. The Institute of Dentistry is pleased to report that interviews have followed in recent editions of Scottish Dental Magazine and the British Dental Journal. Rachel reflects that, “in facilitating creativity, we are able to know more about the sick person and the illness than just the name of the disease and the science that explains it”. Rachel’s oil on canvas Sadness and Sorrow explores this idea and seeks to convey the “noise of sadness and the texture of pain” - a work that has recently been nominated for a John Byrne award.
