University leads biggest Doors Open Day yet

The University of Aberdeen will lead this year's 30th annual Doors Open Day event in Aberdeen, and more buildings than ever before will be open to the public.

Saturday 7 September is Doors Open Day in Aberdeen this year and a bumper number of buildings are open with more events and talks than ever before. Doors Open Day 2019 will see a record-breaking 51 buildings take part in the annual opportunity to explore Aberdeen’s hidden architectural heritage.

As the organiser of this hugely-popular event, the University is also the largest contributor and this year, the new Rowett Institute, Zoology teaching labs, Confucius Institute and King’s Museum will throw open their doors to welcome eager visitors to see behind the scenes for one day only!

New for this year is Victoria Road School in Torry where visitors will be allowed limited access to the fire-damaged former school building for one day only as part of special pre-booked tours. There will also be opportunities to meet members of the team to learn about future plans for this historic site.

Another new addition this year is North East Scotland College, where there will be a chance to visit the Planetarium which has only recently reopened to the public after being closed for around 10 years.

Throughout the day many family friendly events will be held across the city, including an opportunity to explore the fire station, learn CPR and hands-on science in the Institute of Medical Science with Techfest.

Chris Croly, Public Engagement Officer at the University said: ‘It’s great to see so many buildings participating this year. Doors Open Day remains one of the most popular days in Aberdeen which really does offer something for everyone. The main day is Saturday 7th September but the Synagogue will be open on Sunday 8th for people to visit.’

A free bus will be available on Doors Open Day which will leave from the front of the Sheriff Court at regular intervals and stopping at key sites around the city. The bus is provided by First Group Heritage Trust.

The full list of buildings open and details of what exciting activities they have on is available to download:

Printed copies of the leaflets are available from Aberdeen City libraries, Tourist Information Office and Aberdeen Maritime Museum.

Doors Open Day is coordinated nationally by the Scottish Civic Trust, and locally by the Aberdeen Doors Open day committee. Along with Scottish Archaeology and Heritage Festival, it forms Scotland’s contribution to European Heritage Days. For further information please visit the Doors Open Day website.
