Join us for this conversation event in which Dr Helen Pierce (Art History) and Dr Mary Pryor (Centre for Academic Development) will discuss Darly's career, her successes and her missteps, as a pioneering figure in the development of British caricature as a serious art form.
In eighteenth-century London, Mary Darly was born into obscurity and died in a workhouse. But in her lifetime, this self-described 'fun merchant' enjoyed notable creative and commercial success as a designer, publisher and seller of caricatures, critiquing both powerful political figures and the latest fashion crazes. Darly also wrote, and self-published, what is thought to be the earliest English how-to guide on caricature drawing.
