This is a past event

The doors to the Sir Duncan Rice Library will be open to visitors on Saturday 7 September.

About the Library building

The Sir Duncan Rice Library was opened by Queen Elizabeth II in September 2012. Designed by Danish architects Schmidt Hammer Lassen, the building is an iconic architectural landmark of North East Scotland. Its eight floors house the largest of the University's modern collections including Arts, Humanities, Sciences and Social Sciences, while historic collections of rare books, manuscripts and archives are located on the Lower Ground Floor.

What's on today:

10am – 2pm Collections Close Up: Aberdeen in Africa, Africa in Aberdeen. (7th Floor)

Drop-in to the Library to see a selection of  items from the African collections, to hear about the origins of African objects in Western Museums and to celebrating the craft, skill, and beauty of items produced by African artists and craftspeople. This pop-up “show and tell” session is the result of a year-long collaboration between the African Women’s Group Scotland, the University Collections, and the Scottish Civic Trust’s Diverse Heritage Project.

This event will include music from Gameli Tordzro.

As part of the 'Aberdeen in Africa, Africa in Aberdeen' event, music will be provided by special guest, Gameli Tordzro. Dr Gameli Tordzro is a Ghanaian multiple arts professional and a Creative Arts researcher, consultant and lecturer in Glasgow. His research is in creative arts and translating cultures, language and education with a focus on African diaspora music, video film production, story and storytelling.

 Doors Open Day 2024

10am - 5pm Exhibition: Striking Impressions (Ground Floor)

Visit the exhibition “Striking Impressions” and discover how faces have been interpreted and depicted in different ways. Anatomy, divination, caricature, sculpture, painting, masks – there’s a lot on display! We don’t just want people to look at stuff though – throughout the exhibition we’re encouraging visitors to reflect and engage with the displays creatively. There’s even a creative space in the middle of the gallery where you can just sit and use the art supplies provided.

10am – 5pm Old Aberdeen Library (Ground Floor)

Come along and find out about Aberdeen City Libraries.  You can join the library, take part in fun craft activities and we will have a Bookbug session at 10.30 (booking required as places as limited). Bookbug booking link
