Biography: Son of John Burns; born Cairnie, 4 December 1878. M.A. (III Class), 1899. Private, 3rd Gordon Highlanders, 4 April 1917; commissioned, No. 8 Officer Cadet Battalion, 28 November 1917; attached to 4th (Res.) Gordon Highlanders, 6th Gordon Highlanders. Served—Home, 1917-18; France, April 1918-January 1919. Final rank, 2nd Lieutenant.
