McWilliam, Charles Thomas

Biography: Son of Rev. Thomas McWilliam, Foveran ; born New Byth, 4 November 1892 ; educated at Fordyce and Banff Academies ; matriculated in Arts, 1910 ; graduated M.A., 1913, and was studying Law when war broke out. A member of "U" Company, he was mobilized in August 1914, but by the end of the month was commissioned in the 5th Battalion Gordon Highlanders, with whom he went to France in May 1915. There he was attached for duty to the 51st Divisional Cyclist Company, and served with it during the remainder of his time in France. On 18 March 1916 he was killed in the trenches near Arras, leaving behind him the memory of a considerate and devoted gentleman, with a genius for making friends, and with the faculty of grasping readily all sides of a situation and making the wise decision.
