Macdonald, Alastair David

Biography: Son of William N. and Jean T. Macdonald, French Master at the Central School, Aberdeen ; born Aberdeen, 31 March 1917 ; educated at Aberdeen Grammar School and Robert Gordon's College. At the University he took a prominent part in its activities before graduating M.A. in 1939 with First Class Honours in History winning the Forbes Medal and the Caithness Prize. In the same year he won the Organist Scholarship at St. Catherine's College, Cambridge. In 1939 he was commissioned in the Royal Norfolk Regiment and posted to Singapore where during the crisis he was Staff Captain to a mixed force. In an effort to get away to Java he is believed to have lost his life on 28 February 1942 when a coastal vessel was torpedoed by the Japanese near Padang.
