- Biography
- Army officer and politician. Educated Scottish grammar schools, Eton, Winchester College and Geneva. Joined the army 1743, major by 1751. Made lieutenant-colonel-commandant 1757. Raised a new regiment, the 77th foot, 1757. Regiment formed the main part of the expeditionary force commanded against the Cherokees 1760. Regiment disbanded 1764. MP for Ayrshire 1761-8. Governor of Dumbarton Castle 1764. Scottish representative peer 1774. Colonel of the 51st foot 1767. General 1793. Governor of Edinburgh Castle 1782. Died 30 Oct 1796.
