- Born 1735. Educated Hackney School and Peterhouse, Cambridge 1751-53. Styled Earl of Euston 1747-57 due to death of his uncle. Grand tour 1753-4. M.P. for Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk 1756-7 (raised to House of Lords on succession to his title). Lord of the bedchamber to the Prince of Wales 1756-8. Succeeded as third duke 1757. Lord lieutenant for Suffolk 1757-62, 1769-90. Political rise 1762-3. Appointed Secretary of State 1765, resigned 1766. Knight of the Garter 1769. Chancellor of Cambridge 1769. Prime Minister 1767(officially 1768), resigned 1770. Lord privy seal 1771-5, 1782-3. Appointed to the board of agriculture 1793. Extensive library sold on his death. Died Euston Hall, 1811.
