- Physician. Born Stratford upon Avon, Warwickshire. Entered University of Leiden 1722, graduated M.D. 1724. Doctor of medicine of Cambridge by royal mandate, Apr 1736. Admitted as a candidate to the Royal Society of Physicians, Sept 1736, fellow 1737. Physician to St Thomas' Hospital 1736-59. Appointed physician to Queen Charlotte 1761. Credited as the first to draw attention to diphtheria. Died London, 1764.
