An Early Anglo-Indian: The Case of Maryam Khan
Maryam Khan, a ward of the Mughal imperial household of Emperor Jahangir (d. 1627) and likely the first elite Indian woman to travel to England, is most recognised as the wife of East India Company merchants William Hawkins (d. 1613) and later Gabriel Towerson (d. 1623). In this presentation attention will be refocused on the fascinating Khan, paying particular attention to her impact on the English spaces she adopted and navigated.
Dr Lubaaba Al-Azami is a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Liverpool’s Department of English and founder of Medieval and Early Modern Orients (MEMOs / memorients.com). MEMOs is an AHRC-funded transnational project on England’s premodern encounters with the Islamic Worlds. Her book, First Encounters: How England and Mughal India Shaped the World, is forthcoming from John Murray Press in 2024.
