Biography

I am a Fellow of the Chartered Insurance Institute (FCII) with a specialisation in Risk Management alongside being a Member of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (MRICS) with a career in both Insurance and Real Estate professional practice for over 30 years.

After 18 years working in Professional practice as a Commercial Real Estate Valuer in Leeds, I took up my current post as Lecturer in Real Estate here in Aberdeen.  I remain strongly committed to the RICS as an RICS Assessor, Chairperson and Auditor for the Assessment of Professional Competence (APC) and accredited trainer for the next generation of RICS APC assessors and chairpersons.

I actively use my connections in professional practice across the UK bringing industry experts to speak, take part in student presentations, site visits and field trips to create active learning opportunities. After mentoring many graduates during my time in practice, my aim is to develop courses that bridge the gap between academic and professional practice and allow students to apply theory and methodology effectively.  I continue to mentor our alumni, along with other local based graduates through presenting at MATRICS events (a sub section of RICS for graduates) as they begin their Assessment of Professional competence (APC) to become Chartered Surveyors.

I am keen to encourage greater numbers of students from across the world to study Real Estate here at the University. The RICS is a global institution with very strong regulatory standards and an ethical focus; it is my aim to ensure all our graduates from the University of Aberdeen embody these standards and ethical principles wherever their career might lead.   As surveyors we have a direct influence on the built environment around all of us, we are in essence custodians of the landscapes we live in and out legacy continues for many years for those who follow us. We must use our knowledge and expertise to create that sustainable future for all.
