“Skill Mismatches and Competitiveness: High‐Skill Workers, Firms and Industries”

In a world characterised by rapidly evolving technologies and shifting patterns of comparative advantage, firms’ competiveness crucially rest on their ability to find the necessary skills required to identify and exploit new market niches and to overcome barriers to internationalisation. This project will study the incidence of high-skill mismatch in the Scottish labour market, focusing on both supply- and demand-side factors. It will also study how recent graduates make decisions about where to locate, examining how the characteristics of firms and industries, and actual and perceived mismatch affect those locational decisions.

The Business School (Economics Division), University of Aberdeen, invites applications from prospective PhD students for an ESRC/Scottish Government funded +3 studentship commencing in Autumn 2014. The proposed study will be supervised by Professors Catia Montagna and Keith Bender, and the successful applicant will work collaboratively with the Scottish Government.

This studentship includes fees and the standard maintenance grant, currently circa £13,863 pa, plus a research training and support grant of up to £750 per annum. For further details of the proposed project and an informal discussion, please contact Professor Catia Montagna (c.montagna@abdn.ac.uk).

Applicants are expected to have an Upper Second or First Class undergraduate degree in Economics, and must have completed an MSc in Economics or related discipline.
