Professor Alan Sangster, Chair in Accounting History at the University of Aberdeen Business School, has been selected to receive the 2022 Outstanding Accounting Educator Award of the American Accounting Association (AAA).
Established in 1973, Professor Sangster is the first winner of the award in its 50-year history to be based in Europe, and only the second not located in North America.
The Award is sponsored by the PricewaterhouseCoopers Foundation and is presented to educators with sustained and substantive contributions including educational innovation, excellence in teaching, publications, research guidance to graduate students, and significant involvement in professional and academic societies and activities.
A chartered accountant with a PhD from the University of Glamorgan and MSc from the University of Strathclyde, Professor Sangster is editor-in-chief of Accounting Education; deputy chair of the British Accounting and Finance Association (BAFA) Accounting History Special Interest Group (SIG), which he founded; and a past chair of the BAFA Accounting Education SIG and the Expert Systems/Emerging Technologies section of the AAA.
He was chair for Scotland, Ireland and Northern England of the UK Board of Accreditation of Accounting Education Courses. Since 1983, he has taught in Australia, Brazil, England, Northern Ireland, and Scotland; and published eight textbooks, four research books, 20 book chapters and 80 refereed articles in journals including The Accounting Review, Journal of Management Accounting Research, Journal of Business Finance & Accounting, Abacus, British Accounting Review, Accounting, Auditing & Accountability Journal, Accounting Historians Journal, Business History, Issues in Accounting Education, Journal of Information Technology, and Expert Systems with Applications.
Professor Sangster said: “It is a great honour to receive this, the highest award available to accounting academics from a jury of my peers, supported by past and present colleagues, and past students from across the world. I am very grateful to the American Accounting Association and to the PWC Foundation for their generosity and support.”
The formal presentation will take place in San Diego, California, on 2 August.
