Congratulations to Archie Simpson, 2nd year MA Finance student who was first awarded the Cormack Family Foundation Scholarship in 2019 and continues to benefit from this life-changing scholarship programme.
In September 2018 Aberdonian businessman and Chairman at Aberdeen Football Club Dave Cormack alongside his family donated over £270,000 to set up a new scholarship programme to enable students from widening access backgrounds to study at the University of Aberdeen.
Since 2018 the Scholarship has supported students through the Medicine (MBChB) degree programme and through undergraduate degree programmes within the Business School.
Archie Simpson was delighted to be one of the students awarded this scholarship commenting that “The scholarship has impacted me in many ways, firstly it allowed me to live in student accommodation for my first year which is something I always wanted to do but though it would be impossible due to my personal circumstances. I was able to buy a new laptop, books for my course and in general it just improved my financial freedom to do more things. I’m definitely very thankful to have been given such an opportunity as I know not many are as fortunate as I to be in a position such as this.”
This year the meeting with all ten current Cormack Family Foundation Scholars, members of the Cormack family, Dave, Fiona and one of their daughters Dr Sarah Cormack-Patton was hosted virtually and went ahead successfully with Dave and Fiona joining from Florida and Sarah from San Francisco.
Professor Norman Hutchison from the Business School and Professor Stephen Davies from the School of MMSN also attended. A live meeting went ahead in summer last year, at the IMS, but of course this was not possible this year due to the Covid-19 restrictions.
Professor Norman Hutchison commented “The meeting was an excellent opportunity for the students and staff to meet with the Cormack family. Their financial support of young people is much appreciated - the gift of a good education is such a prize. The students demonstrated great resilience in adapting to the strange circumstances that we are all operating under, and clearly valued the financial support they have received”
