Abstract:
Abstract: Decentralized finance (DeFi) introduces a new model of financial intermediation, replacing traditional intermediaries with smart contracts to deliver core financial services such as borrowing, lending, and asset exchanges. In this talk, I will provide an overview of DeFi's promises and achievements to date, discussing the challenges at the settlement, asset, and application layers of the ecosystem. I will examine how settlement constraints and inefficient market design contribute to maximal extractable value (MEV), hindering the broader adoption of DeFi. Finally, I offer perspectives on DeFi’s future, highlighting its potential in microfinance and the tokenization of real-world assets.
