Why did you choose to study at the University of Aberdeen?

I chose Aberdeen because of its outstanding academic reputation, consistently ranked among the top 20 universities in the UK. A key factor that enabled me to embark on my PhD journey was the prestigious full scholarship I was awarded, which covered three years of study. Without it, my PhD dream may not have become a reality. Additionally, in my research on family-friendly environments across the UK, Scotland consistently emerged as one of the most welcoming and supportive regions for families, making Aberdeen an ideal place to pursue advanced academic work while maintaining a balanced and fulfilling personal life.

What is your PhD topic and why does it interest you?

My PhD research focuses on “The Impact of FinTech, Populism, and Supervisory Cooperation Agreements on Bank Liquidity Creation.” I chose this topic because it brings together three powerful forces – technology, politics, and regulatory coordination that are reshaping the global financial landscape.  Banks are central to economic development through their role in liquidity creation, a function that became especially critical during and after the 2008-2009 global financial crisis. The crisis highlighted how disruptions in banking systems can ripple through economies, underscoring the importance of understanding and strengthening bank liquidity. By examining the intersection of FinTech, political governance, and cross-border supervision, my research provides insights for bank managers, regulators, and policymakers to enhance financial stability and support sustainable economic growth.

I now see opportunities not just in industry, but also in academia, policy advisory, financial regulation, and research-driven innovation.

Student standing PhDLearning from experience is an important part of studying at the University of Aberdeen. Have you undertaken any practical experience (work experience/workshops/field trips etc) during your degree so far?

I have undertaken a range of enriching practical experiences during my PhD at the University of Aberdeen. From my second month, I began working as a Graduate Teaching Assistant and also served as an Administrator within the Business School. These roles provided invaluable hands-on experience in areas such as accreditation applications, Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) initiatives, and administrative leadership. I was also honoured to serve as the Postgraduate Research (PGR) Representative for the Business School. In this role, I acted as a liaison between the PGR team and fellow PhD students, helping to improve communication, foster community, and raise important concerns affecting the student body. Beyond the university, I collaborated with academics on research projects involving institutions across Scotland, expanding my academic network and contributing to meaningful interdisciplinary work. I also attended numerous workshops, both at the University of Aberdeen and other universities which broadened my perspective and deepened my appreciation for diversity in research cultures. These experiences have significantly enriched my academic journey, enhancing both my research capabilities and leadership skills.

How do you feel about your career prospects now vs. before you started your degree?

Before starting my PhD at the University of Aberdeen, I had a solid foundation in accounting and finance, with professional experience and qualifications that positioned me well within industry. However, my career prospects felt somewhat slim, primarily tied to conventional finance roles. Since embarking on my PhD journey, my career outlook has expanded significantly, both in depth and direction. I now see opportunities not just in industry, but also in academia, policy advisory, financial regulation, and research-driven innovation.

The University fosters an inclusive and collaborative environment where students are encouraged to grow both intellectually and personally.

Student standing PhDWhat training & support have you received during your research?  How has it helped you?

Throughout my PhD journey, I have received extensive training and support that have significantly enriched my research and professional development. I gained access to a wide range of academic resources, including research databases, peer-reviewed journal platforms such as Elsevier, and data analysis software like STATA. In addition, I received training in modern data analytics tools such as Power BI, Tableau, and SQL, which enhanced my ability to interpret complex datasets and draw meaningful insights. Beyond technical training, I benefited greatly from tailored career support services, including one-on-one coaching sessions, workshops, and guidance from the Business School PGR team.

How have you found the flexibility of your research alongside other commitments? (working part time/care responsibilities etc).

The ability to manage my schedule allowed me to plan my research activities around key personal and professional obligations without compromising the quality of my work. Having access to my office space seven days a week was particularly helpful, as it enabled me to work in focused mode even on weekends or evenings, whenever time permitted. Additionally, the option to work from home provided further flexibility, especially during periods of increased family responsibilities. This adaptable research environment empowered me to remain productive, sustain momentum in my PhD journey, and maintain a healthy work-life balance

One of the most memorable aspects has been the warmth and approachability of the staff. There is a strong culture of care within the university community. Staff go out of their way to ensure students feel seen, heard, and valued. Whether it was accessing resources, navigating challenges, or simply needing someone to listen, I always found someone ready to help. This human connection made a significant difference in my journey, especially as an international student managing both academic and personal responsibilities. It created a sense of belonging that enriched my overall PhD experience and reminded me that success is not only about academic achievement but also about the people and environment that support you along the way.
