The Scottish Archaeological Forum (SAF) is delighted to deliver a hybrid conference at the University of Aberdeen in October 2023, with the theme of 'Insiders and Outsiders in Scottish Archaeology'.
Through the theme of ‘Insiders and Outsiders in Scottish Archaeology’ we aim to highlight efforts to address the under-representation of certain groups within archaeology, both in representations of Scotland’s heritage and in current archaeological practice. While archaeological evidence shows Scotland’s past to have always been one of diverse communities, there is an increasing awareness of inequality remaining within modern archaeological discourse. We are keen to explore initiatives which challenge pre-conceptions, spotlight marginal voices, and aim to make Scottish archaeology more accessible to the wider community.
SAF was established in 1969 to organise ‘conferences and workshops furthering and promoting archaeological research in Scotland.’ (SAF, n.d.). SAF aims to bring together at these events, including this conference, all of those engaged with archaeology in Scotland, including those working in the academic and commercial sectors, and those involved with community projects. The Forum is run by a committee of predominantly postgraduate students and early career researchers, with a sub-committee established for the purpose of organising the main conference.
