Menstruation: Policy, Rights and the Law
Since the establishment of The Menstruation Research Network UK (MRN) in 2019, menstruation has continued to increase its presence in politics and policy, law, environmental debates, and economic discourse. Scotland has passed the Period Product (Free Provision) (Scotland) Act, and the UK is increasingly providing free products through the End Period Poverty Task Force, including at the University of Aberdeen. British, Scottish, Welsh and Irish governments have commissioned reports into product costs, pollution, and shame. The network has been involved in these debates, lending interdisciplinary expertise about menstruation to policy makers, colleagues, and activists. Today, the continuation of the network is more necessary than ever, as menstrual discourse shifts from a focus on poverty and products to the root cause of menstrual taboos: shame, invisibility, exclusion, and fear. Likewise, now is the time to document the positive sides of menstruation: activism, art, and joy.
The University of Aberdeen is delighted to be hosting the first of three Wellcome funded MRN conferences which seek to enable menstrual experts across disciplines in and out of academia, and from across the world, to network and collaborate on themes of high policy, activist, legal, and public interest as pertaining to menstruation. Exploring the broad theme of menstruation, policy, rights and the law, this one-day hybrid event will comprise of a morning of research papers, including a keynote presentation, and an afternoon of workshops dedicated to discussing future collaboration, funding opportunities, and key research questions.
