The author invokes their spiritual relationship to God the Father and Son, expressed through Christ's words on the cross to the Virgin: 'Woman, behold thy son'; and to St John: 'Behold thy mother' (John, 19:26, 27). He commends his body and soul to them, asking that throughout his life, inwardly and outwardly, they may be his guardians and intercessors for him with God.
