The aim of the course is to familiarise students with the range of abiotic and biotic agents that can cause damage in forests, with particular emphasis on the ecological impacts of the different agents and, where appropriate, the ecology of the organisms involved. Impacts of damage-causing agents at various levels will also be considered.
Content:
Phytophthora Diseases of Trees; Fine Root Pathogens of Trees and the Rhizosphere Environment; Edpidemiology and modelling of forest diseases; Dead and Decayed Trees as Important Support for Biodiversity; Control of Forest Diseases: general principles; The Threat to Europe Posed by American Oak Wilt; Phytosanitary and Quarantine Problems for Forest Health; fire; forest pets; integrated pest management; pest monitoring; semiochemicals' management and control of insect pests.Structure
Three 2-hour lectures and one two hour seminar per week.
Assessment
Continuous assessment (100%), based on 4 assignments (two case studies; two essays).

The aim of the course is to develop an understanding of the measurement of trees and forests.
Content:
- tree and crop measurement
- forest inventories
- production forecasting
- the use of remote sensing in forest monitoring
- Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in forestry.Structure
6 week course: three 1-2 hour classes (Tuesday, Wednesday, Firday at 11am) per week plus tutorials (to be arranged). Five forest measurement practicals (in a forest or the university arboretum - Thursday am) and six computer practicals (Thusday pm) for GIS and mensuration work.
Assessment
Continuous assessment (100%), based on 7/8 assignments.

The aim of the course is to demonstrate various aspects of forest ecology and management in Great Britain.
Content:
- visits to forests in North Britain, meeting those responsible for managing the forests
- forests visted will include those in both the public and private sector
- forest management objectives discussed will be environmental, social and economic
- exercises on forest ecology and management.Structure
One week residential field course based in Inverness or the Lake District (alternating years) to include five full day forest visits. Five tutorials will be held in Aberdeen before and after the trip.
