School pupils to descend for the start of May Festival

Hundreds of school children will descend on Old Aberdeen today (Tuesday May 24) for the start of the University of Aberdeen May Festival.

Pupils from schools from Aberdeen city and shire, including Newtonhill, Maud, Torry and Kittybrewster, will travel to King’s Campus to enjoy a host of different free events at the May Festival Schools' programme, sponsored by Total.

The Schools’ Festival is the precursor to the main May Festival programme, which also includes a dedicated strand for children and families running on Saturday and Sunday.

The School’s programme features a wide selection of events for pupils (and teachers) to enjoy such as storytelling, music, science, hands-on workshops as well as events in the University’s fascinating Sir Duncan Rice Library and the Aberdeen Biodiversity Centre.

Pupils will join Dr Marty Jopson from the One Show as he takes a sparky journey through the story of how we tamed electricity, the most spectacular of nature’s forces, while younger audiences will hear from storyteller Sheena Blackhall who will take them on a magical adventure into the deep dark wood, where they will meet a host of enchanting characters, including mouse, snake, fox and owl... and the main attraction…the Gruffalo!

Over the weekend, the Total Children’s Programme offers the chance for children to come along with their families where there will be a  wide variety of events on offer to fire  up young imaginations.

University of Aberdeen Events and Engagement Executive, Jill Murray, said: “Both the School’s and Children’s programmes always prove to be hugely popular thanks to the fantastic variety of events that never fail to entertain our youngest festival goers!

“I’m sure this year will be the same and we are looking forward to welcoming children from across the region to campus where they can feed their imaginations with our great selection of events including storytelling, music, science, and interactive workshops.

“All of the events in the Schools’ Programme are free of charge thanks to the support of Total and we are hugely grateful to be able to deliver such a varied and fun range of events for youngsters.”

Brian Wilkie, TEP UK Corporate Affairs Director at Total, said: “We are delighted to be associated with this major north east festival that grows in popularity each year. As sponsors of the children’s festival, schools and environment programme, we encourage everyone to join in the vast array of creative and interactive activities designed to encourage, inspire and promote learning aptly set within the historic grounds of King’s College.”
