New exhibition on display at the Sir Duncan Rice Library

The University of Aberdeen is hosting a new Art Science exhibition which will allow people to experience Bennachie's environmental history through a new sound installation by international artist collective, ~ in the fields.

The exhibited installation which is now on display in the Sir Duncan Rice Library’s Ground Floor Events Space results from a collaboration between ~ in the fields, which consists of Nicole Heidtke and Stefan Baumberger, and Dr. Edward Schofield of the School of Geosciences at the University of Aberdeen, exploring the past environment of the iconic Bennachie range through soil sampling and pollen analysis.

The artists also conducted research at the University of Aberdeen’s Special Collections Centre, discovering images of Bennachie depicted in rare books and archives.

~ in the fields artists  Nicole Heidtke and Stefan Baumberger commented: “Our work is based around natural phenomena, environmental issues, landscape and poetic moments. Throughout the project we worked with Dr. James Edward Schofield of the Geoscience Department, University of Aberdeen. We are interested in his methods of visualising the pollen data as a diagram, as well as interpreting them to explain past landscapes – or even the human influence on Bennachie.”

The exhibition runs until Sunday, November 17.

The work by ~ in the fields and Dr. Schofield has been undertaken over the last six months as one of four international artists participating in the Natural Bennachie project led by Scottish Sculpture Workshop, which is supported by Scottish Natural Heritage and Creative Scotland.
