Voting opens for Student Elections

The annual Aberdeen University Students’ Association (AUSA) elections take place this week.

37 candidates will run for 11 positions in the polls, with 9 candidates running for the hotly-contested position of Student President.

Voting is open from today (Tuesday April 17) until Thursday (April 19) and a lively week of campaigning is anticipated.

From the 11 positions contested, six are full-time paid sabbatical roles, where the successful candidates will either take a year out of their studies to pursue the role, or will use it as their first step onto the career ladder.

The other positions are part-time and the successful candidates will be completing their required jobs while also balancing a full-time course of study.

Current Student President, Tessa Birley, says: “We are delighted that these elections are the most contested ever. It is a reflection of the hard work we have been put in to raise the profile of AUSA.

“I would encourage every student to vote, it only takes a minute, and your vote really can make all the difference. We also have elections for student council coming up in two weeks time and it's not too late to stand for election.”

Voting opens at 9am on Tuesday morning and closes Thursday 19 April at 5.00pm.

All students at the University of Aberdeen are eligible to vote and they can do so at www.ausa.org.uk/elections.

AUSA will also be facilitating Polling Stations which students can visit to vote in the following University buildings between 10am and 3.000pm on each day of the voting period :

·         Butchart Centre – Alfie’s Cafe

·         Library – Ground Floor Foyer

·         The Hub – Reception

·         Foresterhill – Suttie Centre Foyer

Voting will close at 5pm on Thursday (April 19) with the winners announced later that evening in the Pearl Lounge.
