Varsity rivals take on 30 event Granite City Challenge

Friendly rivalries between the University of Aberdeen and Robert Gordon University will come to the fore when sporting students compete at this year’s Granite City Challenge.

Taking place on Wednesday 14 March, the Challenge is now in its 15th year. It will see almost 700 students engage in healthy competition on the field, court, track and in the pool.

A total of 30 events will take place from 9am to 6pm within a number of Aberdeen city’s top sporting venues including RGU: SPORT, Curl Aberdeen, King’s College Playing Fields, Pitfichie Forest and Aberdeen Sports Village.

This year will see students competing across a variety of sporting disciplines including: swimming, curling, rifle shooting, shinty, football, hockey, basketball, trampoline and table tennis.

The University of Aberdeen teams aim to hold on to their title having won with 16 point to 11 in 2011, and securing 15 wins to 14 in 2010.

Adam Downie, President for Sport at the University of Aberdeen commented: “This is the largest varsity competition in the country and one of the highlights in our sporting calendar. To have students competing in 30 different competitions in one day is a fantastic reflection of the amount of sport on offer in Aberdeen. I’m looking forward to some great matches and some well-earned victories.”

Nicola Scott, President of Sport and Physical Activity at Robert Gordon University added: “The Granite City Challenge is a great event to showcase the wide variety of sports that the Universities offer. When nearing the end of the season it is an excellent celebration of sport- even greater if it’s a win. I would like to offer everyone taking part the best of luck, and would urge members of the public and universities’ communities to get down to spectate this not to be missed event.”
