Lecture to explore how maths can solve relationship problems

The scientific theory that links love and relationships with mathematics will be explored at an evening lecture being held as part of TechFest In September 2009.

Dr Marco Thiel, a mathematician at the University of Aberdeen, will give an hour-long presentation on the connection between mathematics and our personal lives.

He will explore issues such as how we find the right partner, the science behind dating services and why there are only two sexes, and explain why many of these questions can be solved using mathematics.

Dr Thiel said: “Many questions we may have about love and sex can be answered mathematically, and sometimes the answer can be quite surprising. This lecture will look at how maths can offer very practical solutions to various problems we might have in our relationships.”

The lecture, entitled “Mathematics and Sex”, is recommended for over 12s and will be followed by a question and answer session.

It will be held at 7.30pm on Friday, September 18, at the Fraser Noble Building at the University of Aberdeen.

Tickets are priced at £3.50 for adults and £3 concessions, plus booking fee, available from Aberdeen Box Office on 01224 641122 or www.boxofficeaberdeen.com

This event is part of the KCA Deutag Discovery Series of evening lectures being during TechFest In September, Aberdeen’s 16th annual festival of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).

Sponsored by joint principal funders Shell and BP, this year’s festival is set to attract a record 20,000 visitors between September 11 and 28.

The festival aims to engage young people in the four main subjects of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics and encourage them to go on to follow a career which utilises these skills, as well as instilling the relevance of STEM in adult life.
