Aberdeen law students win the prestigious Lord Jones Competition

Aberdeen University Mooting Society has won the 2024 Lord Jones intervarsity mooting competition.

The win marks the first time since 2017 that Aberdeen has reached the finals, and its first win since 2006.

Aberdeen’s Syed M. Humaid Adil and Dina Hingorani saw off stiff competition from Dundee to land the title in the ninth edition of the competition which was judged by Lady Drummond, who is a Senator of the College of Justice.

Ms Hingorani said: “I am grateful to have won the Lord Jones Mooting held by the University of Dundee alongside Syed M. Humaid Adil.

“It was an incredible opportunity to receive feedback from multiple academics and Lady Drummond, while gaining a deep appreciation for the skilfully crafted mooting problem by Dr Alex Simmonds.

“Dundee’s Finlay Crowe and Andrew Savage were formidable opponents, and it was a pleasure to compete against them.

“Winning this competition on behalf of the University of Aberdeen for the first time since 2006 has been an incredibly rewarding experience and could not have been done without the support of the University of Aberdeen Mooting Society, and our Master of Moots, Dr Jonathan Ainslie.”

Mr Adil said: “Competing in the Lord Jones Mooting Competition is without a doubt one of the best advocacy experiences available to students. Reaching the finals of the competition after four moots in a single day, alongside Dina Hingorani, was itself a huge achievement for us.

“I am very grateful for the experience, but also for the feedback I received from Lady Drummond on my advocacy and argumentation. Needless to say, there could be no better way to round off my time here at Aberdeen as an undergraduate law student.”

Dr Ainslie added: "The Lord Jones is well established as one of the most widely attended mooting competitions in Scotland and the standard of advocacy across the whole competition was very high.

“The success of our team is a testament to their hard work and preparation over the past few weeks and serves to highlight the rich variety of extra-curricular activities available to law students at Aberdeen, including those which help to develop practical skills for the legal profession."
