Well-known North-east writer, economist and farmer Charlie Allan and The Honourable Lord Marnoch, Senator of the College of Justice in Scotland, will both be honoured by the University of Aberdeen at its annual Winter Graduation ceremonies at Marischal College next month.
Charlie Allan, of Methlick, Aberdeenshire, will receive the honorary degree of Master of the University on Friday, November 26 at 3pm. Lord Marnoch will be awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Laws on Saturday, November 27, at 11am.
Born in Stirling, Charlie Allan is a graduate of the University of Aberdeen. His career began as a lecturer in economic history at Glasgow University (1962-63), later moving to St Andrews University (1963-65) and then on to Strathclyde University (1965-74). In 1982, he joined the BBC as a producer/presenter and was also appointed editorial adviser to the Leopard Magazine
His publications include Theory of Taxation, Death of a Papermill, Farmer’s Diary I, II, III, IV, V and Neeps and Strae.
Lord Marnoch is a graduate of the University of Aberdeen (MA, LLB) and was admitted to the Faculty of Advocates in 1963. As Junior Counsel, he was Standing Junior to the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries for Scotland and to the Highlands and Islands Development Board.
He was appointed Queen’s Counsel in 1975 and served as an Advocate Depute from 1983 to 1986. He was a member of the Criminal Injuries Compensation Board from 1986 to 1990.
Lord Marnoch is an Honorary Vice-President of the Salmon and Trout Association.
