Opera buffs offered fun alternative to Christmas shopping

A fun-packed alternative to Christmas shopping will take place at the University of Aberdeen this weekend with an afternoon of opera for children and adults.

The light-hearted workshops - organised by the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, University Music and Texaco - will be held on Saturday, December 4, at the University’s Central Refectory, St Machar Drive, from 2pm to 4.30pm.

The event builds on the success of last year’s Opera For All day, which gave those taking part a chance to try their hand at singing, acting and storytelling. Tim Dean, Head of Opera at the Academy, and Dr Roger Williams, Director of University Music will again lead the workshops.

Dr Williams said the aim was to make opera and drama more familiar, less remote and as fun as possible.

"Opera for All is designed for a wide appeal and this year it will be based on Mozart’s great opera, The Magic Flute. Everyone will be split into groups according to interests and the afternoon will end with a final presentation by everyone.”

Texaco’s Public Affairs Manager Muriel Roberts said: "Texaco has supported the Academy for some years. The idea of a family workshop is to help them reach a wider audience and demonstrate the wonderful talent they nurture.

“The participation of the University of Aberdeen in developing and supporting the workshop idea makes for a solid, creative partnership."

The recommended minimum age for the children in 7 years and all primary school children must be accompanied by an adult. Admission is free and refreshments will be provided. Anyone interested in taking part should book their place in advance by calling Angela Mowat on (01224) 272014.
