Food safety experts and senior managers from universities from all over Europe will be in Aberdeen from the 11th to the 13th of May 2000 to attend the European Policy Towards Safety in the Food Chain conference being held at the University of Aberdeen.
The conference, which is the 4th conference of the Interuniversity Conference for Agricultural and Related Sciences in Europe (ICA), aims to give guidance on the development of curricula in higher education in agricultural and related sciences to address the new challenges of “Safety in the Food Chain”.
Until now, the curriculum for students in the agricultural sciences has often lacked an integrated approach to the consideration of the complete food chain from “the soil to the table”.
Emphasis will be put on European policy, legislation, and the actual needs for future graduates from the viewpoints of farmers’ organisations, food industries, retailers and consumers.
The conference will be addressed by speakers on Friday, 12th May between 9:15am – 15.30 pm. They will include Professor Hugh Pennington from the University of Aberdeen, discussing “Regulating Food Safety – We could do Better”, Professor R Venskutonis from Lithuania, discussing “Safety in the Food Chain in Eastern and Central Europe”, Dr J Hallaert from Brussels discussing “European Policy and Regulation on Food Safety”, and Professor A Huyghebaert from Ghent speaking on “Safe Food: The Truth or the Myth.”
Over 60 conference delegates will be attending from 20 European countries: Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Poland, Romania, the Slovak Republic, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and the UK.
The conference is organised by the Interuniversity Conference for Agricultural and Related Sciences in Europe (ICA), whose President is Professor Cees Karssen, Rector Magnificus, Wageningen University, the Netherlands, and whose General Secretary is based at Ghent University, Belgium.
