In time for America’s Thanksgiving celebrations, a festival of American music is set for Sunday, November 19th in the elegant setting of the Mitchell Hall, Marischal College. The programme will feature popular pieces from Aaron Copland, Samuel Barber, John Philip Sousa, Rodgers & Hammerstein, and George Gershwin.

The University Symphony Orchestra will be under the direction of the renowned conductor Dennis Assaf, who will be appearing in Aberdeen as part of his 2000-01 season, which will also see him performing in Sofia, Bulgaria; Florence, Italy and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Maestro Assaf is the conductor of the Jefferson Symphony Orchestra in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA, and has conducted around the world. Maestro Assaf made his European debut with the University of Aberdeen Choral Society and Symphony in an all Mozart program in 1996.

In the musical programme, the orchestra will explore some of the wide variety of American music, from its inception to a real coming of age. The audience will be treated to selections including Copland’s Appalachian Spring, Gershwin’s An American in Paris, excerpts from South Pacific by Rodgers and Hammerstein, a march by John Philip Sousa, Samuel Barber’ featuring soprano Nancy Ross
