Fourteen leading figures from the worlds of business, journalism, medicine, science, education, the arts and the church, will be awarded honorary doctorates from the University of Aberdeen in this year’s graduation week at Marischal College, which begins on Monday, July 2.
The ceremonies are as follows:
Monday, July 2, at 3pm - Ottar Brox, former Professor of Sociology and Senior Researcher at the Norwegian Institute for Urban and Regional Research, will receive the honorary degree of Doctor of Laws (LLD) on Monday at 3pm.
Monday, July 2, at 6.30pm - The literary critic Professor Helen Vendler of Harvard University will be awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Letters (DLitt), while international singer, voice therapist and teacher of voice Raimund Herincx, will receive the honorary degree of Doctor of Music (DMus). Mr Herincx has performed around the world and has tutored voice studies at the North East of Scotland Music School since 1978.
Tuesday, July 3, at 11am – Alasdair MacIntyre, Professor of Philosophy at the University of Notre Dame will receive the honorary degree of Doctor of Letters (DLitt), while Baroness Onora O’Neill, distinguished academic philosopher and Principal of Newnham College, Cambridge, will be awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Laws (LLD).
Tuesday, July 3, at 3pm - Well-known Scottish news producer and presenter Kirsty Wark will receive the honorary degree of Doctor of Laws (LLD).
Tuesday, July 3, at 6.30pm – Internationally renowned scientist Dr John Steele, Marine Scientist and President Emeritus of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, will be awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Science (DSc).
Wednesday, July 4, at 11am - The “father” of liquid crystals, Emeritus Professor of Chemistry George Gray, of the University of Hull, will receive the honorary degree of Doctor of Science (DSc).
Wednesday, July 4, at 3pm – International engineer Sir Duncan Michael will receive the honorary degree of Doctor of Science (DSc). Sir Duncan is Chairman of Trustees for the Ove Arup Partnership and has worked on major engineering design projects around the world.
Thursday, July 5, at 11am - The Reverend Canon Thomas Wright, Canon Theologian of Westminster, will receive the honorary degree of Doctor of Divinity (DD), while Dr Edmund Kelly, Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of the American insurance group Liberty Mutual will be awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Laws (LLD).
Thursday, July 5, at 3pm - Professor Sir Colin Campbell, Vice Chancellor of the University of Nottingham and The Rt Hon Sir David Steel KBE MSP, journalist, broadcaster and parliamentarian, will both be awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Laws (LLD).
Friday, July 6, at 11am – Distinguished obstetrician Professor The Lord Patel, will receive the honorary degree of Doctor of Science (DSc).
