After a remarkable three years as the University of Aberdeen’s high profile Rector, the well-known broadcaster and cook visits the show to discover how much has changed since working with the industry in her barrister days.
Clarissa will be joined by Hugo Manson, Oil Lives Project Manager, University of Aberdeen, and Roger Patey, Deputy Managing Director of Shell Expro for a photo opportunity at 12.30pm. Hugo Manson is recording an oral history of the North Sea Oil industry for the British Library archives with the support of Aberdeen City council and major oil operators, including Shell Expro.
Lives in the Oil Industry is creating an archive of extended life history interviews with people involved in all areas of the oil and gas industry and from all parts of the country.
The five-year study, now in its second year, is being carried out in association with the British Library and will form part of its renowned National Life Story Collection which already includes collections on the food and steel industries.
Interviewees include offshore and onshore personnel, geologists and other scientists, oil company management and staff, people from the service and contracting companies.
The project team, who are based in departments throughout the University, is also carrying out interviews with men and women representing the financial, political and legal aspects of the industry, and those whose working and personal lives and living environments have been affected by the industry.
Already over 200 hours have been recorded for the Special Collections archive of the University and with the National Sound Archive at the British Library in London. Up to 300 interviews are expected to have been recorded by the time the project is completed in 2005.
It is expected that this unique sound archive will be available on-line, and a book and radio and television programmes are also planned.

3.00-6.00pm A Bug’s Life
Billions of bacteria occupy an underworld never seen by the naked eye. NCIMB Ltd is home to the UK National Collection of Industrial, Food and Marine Bacteria and provides a vast range of environmental services. Representatives from the company, just back from Chicago where they launched their new Twister product, will talk about their work.

10.00am Ten o’clock Talk: Secrets of the Deep
Few of us will ever get the chance to watch life on the ocean floor. Marine biologist, Professor Monty Priede, of Aberdeen’s new OceanLab, the first of its kind in the world, shares the insights of his research team who have developed a fleet of deep sea robots to study life 6000 metres under the sea.
11.00am Launch of Masters in Hydrocarbon Enterprise
A new course, the first of its kind in the world, will be officially launched by the University of Aberdeen during Offshore Europe week. The M.Sc. in Hydrocarbon Enterprise will be launched on Wednesday, September 5 at Stand 508, by Principal C Duncan Rice, who will be joined by Larry Kinch, Chief Executive Officer of WellDynamics, and the Course Director, Dr Bryan Cronin.
The brand new M.Sc. in Hydrocarbon Enterprise, starting in September 2001, has been sponsored by the Larry Kinch Foundation.
2.00pm The Green Challenge
Aberdeen showcases its environmental expertise with the opportunity to meet research leaders in areas as diverse as environmental auditing, bioremediation of contaminated land, and aquaculture.
