Outstanding academics and graduates of the University of Aberdeen elected to Fellowship of The Royal

Esteemed academics and graduates of the University of Aberdeen have joined more than 60 individuals elected to the Fellowship of The Royal Society of Edinburgh (RSE). The distinguished academic and graduate of the University of Aberdeen, Lord Sutherland of Houndwood, has also been made President-elect of the Society following elections held at the RSE on Monday, March 4.

The RSE is Scotland's foremost learned society and Scotland's National Academy of Science & Letters. Election to Fellowship of the Society honours outstanding achievement across all academic subjects, the professions, the arts, commerce, industry and public life.

Two academics from the University, Professor Kevin Edwards, Department of Geography and Environment, and Professor Sergio Della Sala, Department of Psychology, have been elected as Ordinary Fellows, based on the quality of their innovative contributions to their field.

Commenting on his election, Professor Edwards said: "I am delighted to receive this honour for the Department, the University of Aberdeen and for myself. The delight is all the greater because it was unexpected. It provides welcome recognition of geography’s continuing and central role in interdisciplinary studies."

Graduates of the University who have also been honoured with election as Ordinary Fellows include: David Nevin Fraser Bell, Professor of Economics, University of Stirling (MA 1973); Professor Ian Lamont Boyd, Director NERC Sea Mammal Resarch Unit, University of St Andrews (BSc 1979 DSc 1995); Kenneth McKenzie Norrie, Professor of Law and Head of the Law School, University of Strathclyde (PHD 1988); and Susan Rice, Chief Executive, Lloyds TSB Scotland (M Litt 1970).
