towards a European Constitution
With news headlines currently full of issues on European politics and today officially recognised as Europe Day, Professor Neil Walker of the European Institute in Florence and the University of Aberdeen will present a public lecture on the fascinating political and legal debate surrounding the idea of a European Constitution.
Members of the public are invited to join senior European Law specialists to discuss the idea of a European Constitution at the 6th annual Ledingham Chalmers European Law Lecture: The Idea of a European Constitution and the Finalite of Integration at 6.30pm on Friday May 10, 2002 at King's College Conference Centre, University of Aberdeen.
Neil Walker, Professor of European Law at the European University Institute in Florence and Professor of Legal and Constitutional Theory at the University of Aberdeen said: "Europe is currently undergoing an audacious constitutional experiment. Intense debate is now underway on the key questions about the content of Europe's first continent-wide Constitution. There is no doubt that Europe clearly needs a constitutional debate in order to shed its bureaucratic image and mobilize greater public interest and citizen involvement, but is it ready to enshrine the results of this debate in a final constitutional settlement?"
David Laing, Senior Partner at Ledingham Chalmers, sponsors of the annual public lecture commented: "We are delighted to welcome Professor Neil Walker to explore this hot topic at our annual lecture. The subject is of particular relevance as the UK continues to debate the challenge of integration within Europe at different levels."
Professor Paul Beaumont, Head of School of Law and Professor of European and Private International Law at the University of Aberdeen added: "Neil Walker is ideally placed to discuss whether the European Constitution should be created now and whether it should be the end goal, or final version, of European integration. On Europe Day it is good to reflect on what kind of Europe we want. Come and have your say on this highly relevant and controversial topic."
The Ledingham Chalmers European Law Lecture is part of a comprehensive series of events presented by Aberdeen City Council and the University of Aberdeen to celebrate the visit of the Scottish Parliament to Aberdeen.
