Honorary Graduands Summer 2002

Twelve leading figures from the worlds of science, music, medicine, accountancy, religion and law, will be awarded honorary doctorates from the University of Aberdeen in this year's graduation ceremonies at Marischal College, over the period Monday July 1 - Friday July 5, 2002.

The ceremonies are as follows:

Monday, July 1 at 3pm - John P. Grant a Chartered Accountant who for many years taught accountancy within the Faculty of Law at Aberdeen University will receive the honorary degree of Doctor of Laws (LLD).

Tuesday, July 2 at 11am - The Most Revd Rowan Williams, Archbishop of Wales and Bishop of Monmouth, expert on early Christian writings will be awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Divinity (DD). Dr Rowan Williams has just been chosen by the Church of England to be the next Archbishop of Canterbury.

Tuesday, July 2 at 3pm - Professor Sir David Lane, Professor and Head of Molecular Oncology, University of Dundee, instrumental in the further understanding of the p53 gene and how it relates to the development of many types of human cancers will receive the honorary degree of Doctor of Science (DSc).

Tuesday, July 2 at 6.30pm - Singer, broadcaster and business-woman Ms Fiona Kennedy will receive the honorary degree of Doctor of Laws (LLD). A multi-talented entertainer and performer Ms Kennedy was the first female presenter of Record Breakers. Director of Royal Scottish National Orchestra; Non-Executive Director of the Board of Voluntary Service in Aberdeen and Chairman of The Princess Royal Trust for Carers for Grampian and Moray.

Wednesday, July 3 at 11am - Professor James Reason, Emeritus Professor of Psychology, University of Manchester and leading applied psychologist in the area of industrial safety, specialising in human error and organisational accidents will be awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Science (DSc).

Wednesday, July 3 at 3pm - Rabbi Julia Neuberger, Chief Executive, King's Fund. Powerful advocate of patients' rights and ethical conduct of clinical practice and health research. Patron of the North London Hospice and of the Prisoner of Conscience appeal. Vice-President of the Royal College of Nursing, of the United Nations Association, and of the Carers National Association, Rabbi Neuberger will receive the honorary degree of Doctor of Laws (LLD). Also at this ceremony, the leading international figure and Britain's leading authority in the growth area of biomaterials, Professor William Bonfield, Professor of Medical Materials, University of Cambridge will receive the honorary degree of Doctor of Science (DSc).

Thursday, July 4 at 11am - Professor Robert Alexander, Emeritus Professor of Zoology, University of Leeds, leading international authority on animal locomotion who's work has had a major impact on the understanding of human biomechanics and its applications will receive the honorary degree of Doctor of Science (DSc).

Thursday, July 4 at 3pm - Internationally acknowledged legal scholar and the only person in modern times to receive the Leibniz Prize, Professor Dr Reinhard Zimmermann Professor of Law, University of Regensburg will receive the honorary degree of Doctor of Laws (LLD).

Thursday, July 4 at 6.30pm - Mr Richard Armstrong, named in 1996 'Conductor of the Year' in the Royal Philharmonic Society Awards and Music Director of Scottish Opera, will receive the honorary degree of Doctor of Music (DMus).

Friday, July 5 at 11am - Professor Sir Graeme Catto, Dean of Guy's, King's College and St Thomas' Hospitals' Medical and Dental School. Vice-Principal, King's College London. President, General Medical Council. Vice-Principal and Dean, Faculty of Medicine & Medical at Aberdeen University until 2000 will be awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Laws (LLD). Also at this ceremony, Professor John Howie Professor of General Practice, University of Edinburgh and internationally recognised as advancing the cause of research in the general practice context, will be awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Science (DSc).
